My story

01 / The builder

OilRush · Tilt-Wall & Structural Steel

Construction took Hughes across the United States, where he was called on to erect structural steel and lift massive tilt-wall concrete panels.

Tilt-wall erection was his forte. He became known for his speed and recalls an average pace of roughly one wall lifted every five minutes on suitable jobs.

Tap to explore his construction years

From his OilRush operation in Laredo, Texas, founded around 2006, to projects nationwide, Hughes built a reputation around pace, field execution, and the ability to get hard work done. His account of a five-minute average is a personal recollection, not an audited production record.

02 / Roots

Faith, Family & Country

Born to Deanna Longoria and Mike Urdiales, Michael later acquired the Hughes surname through his stepfather, Richard Allen Hughes. He credits his family's faith, guidance, and encouragement as an early foundation.

Meet the Longoria family

His grandfather, Dr. E. M. Longoria of Laredo, was his biggest supporter. His grandmother, Louise Leyendecker Longoria, gave him unconditional love. His aunt Mary Katherine Longoria was a lifelong educator and personal tutor. His mother held regional leadership responsibilities with the Texas Department of Human Resources.

His uncles include Dennis Longoria, a Central Power and Light lobbyist; David Noel Longoria, an attorney who became a judge; and Carlos J. Longoria, an international law attorney whom he admired as a child.

His song Take a Ride expresses his faith and patriotism: “Patriot, take a stand” and “Fear of God is who I am.”

03 / The inventor

Phases Inc. & Beyond

From promotional Sun Jammers sunglasses to perforated mobile billboards and the illuminated Night Tracer flying disc, Hughes pursued products with mass appeal.

Explore the inventions

He and a business associate co-founded Phases Inc. in the 1990s, beginning with Sun Jammers, then developing the concept for perforated one-way-vision vehicle-window advertising, then producing the Night Tracer LED flying disc.

He also created Kiddie Krawler Kushions—stylish protective pads and gloves for crawling babies—and Shoemelians, interchangeable fashion footwear with eight decorative skins per $9.99 set.

04 / The outdoorsman

Kaptains Kamp

Hunting and fishing have been another part of Hughes's life. His Kaptains Kamp guide business is based in Rockport, Texas.

More about his entrepreneurial life

His experience also includes retail, entertainment and product marketing, including former ownership of Barebacks Gentleman's Club in Encinal during the Eagle Ford Shale period.

05 / The investor

Recognize the Opportunity

His investment story includes a long-held belief in silver's relative value and trading opportunities during Tesla's political-news volatility.

Read the investment philosophy

Hughes reports selling silver at $100 per ounce and Tesla shares at $490. These are his accounts, not independently verified transaction records.

“Don't get greedy. Take your profits, stash your dough, and look for the next opportunity.”

06 / The creative

80+ Songs · Books · Mile Zero

With more than 80 original songs, Hughes brings lived experience into his songwriting, books, and storytelling.

Explore the books and music

His titles include RTR — Real Time Resellers, Technology at Your Fingertip — The New Era, A Songwriter's Bible, and AI IN DISGUISE. His Mile Zero music draws from life, work, humor, and personal experience.

07 / The road ahead

FULL SEND — LIVING LIFE ON THE EDGE

His forthcoming autobiography will explore family, faith, construction, ventures, invention, music, difficult decisions, and three years of incarceration between ages 27 and 30—in his own words.

Get a sneak peek

Some roads were paved. Others he had to build himself. Hughes calls himself “the black sheep with the golden touch.” The full life story is still being written.

“This is just the tip. You want the whole stick? I'll give it to you soon—if I can find my memory. I think it's been misplaced!”
